Hirgius Lytar purchased her at a Riddleport slave market, called her Roussanne, and rescued her from those who would have otherwise been harsher masters. He recognized her innate worth, and taught her how to read and to write. Then in every language he knew. She was not only highly intelligent, but she also showed an impressive talent with ink and paper.
He found her a job with a Tengu dealer, who somehow managed to get his claws on all kinds of material. Scrolls, spell books, tomes of literature and science, intercepted correspondence.
After a few years, she became one of his best forgers and copiers. And in the process, she learned a surprisingly large amount of information about spells, history, and science.
She grew obsessed with magic, and began to seek out knowledge of astronomy.
The ever-changing sky itself began to vex her mind. The night revealed the heavens, yet also the lunacy of men; while different days could bring pleasing warmth or destructive storms.
She rationalized her thoughts of the sky to be a longing for escape from the shackles of Riddleport. A way to shed the weight of the world. For in her dreams, she would fly past ne’er-do-wells, and protect her friends with spears of lightning.
On the day that she finally convinced Hirgius to accept repayment of her purchase price, she told him that she would order her affairs and set out to find her star.
She told him about a star that was once (but no longer) a Pole Star; a star that all travelers once used to guide their paths through the darkness.
For even though Vega was no longer a Pole Star, it was still bright and easy to follow.
“As time passes”, she recited from memory, “the heavens move, and present us with new light. We can choose to ignore or to pay attention.”
Now, she sets out to find a path to her star, as the Void Savant Roussanne Vega.
